Prescription for change

Prescription for Change

Many people are quick to medicate their ailments. We pop a pill to treat our symptoms rather than try to discover and eliminate the root causes of our disease.  We take the same approach to organizing.  We reach for quick tips, hoping for an immediate remedy for our symptoms.

Recently, a client called me and canceled the series of appointments she had scheduled.  She said she just couldn’t take the time to get organized.  I could hear the phones ringing off the hook in her office in the background.  She sounded upset and panicked.  I could tell that she really needed help.

If I had a little prescribing notepad like a doctor, the first prescription I would scribble out for clients like her would be the advice to slow down! The next prescription would be for intervention, rehabilitation, and maintenance.  Wouldn’t you be surprised if your doctor wrote you a prescription like that?  Don’t we all want the latest and greatest pill?  We would look at our doctor with confusion or annoyance and demand a quicker, better solution?  This prescription for change, however, will allow us to invest in our own recovery.
