So many of our closets are packed full of clothes we no longer wear and yet we hang onto them. Why? Well, we may want to give them away to a friend or family member. Perhaps we think that those pants will fit again someday. But still they remain, cluttering up our drawers and taking up valuable hanging space, making it difficult to get to the clothes we actually wear.
What if I told you that by giving that old shirt away you are actually helping someone recover from addiction and learn valuable work experience? It’s true!
When you donate clothing and other items to the Union Gospel Mission, you are contributing to not only meeting basic needs but so much more! Check out 5 Facts in 3 Minutes video about the 5 things you need to know about the Union Gospel Mission.
Items donated to the Union Gospel Mission make it into the hands of not only their residents at their LifeChange center but so many other people who are trying to get back on their feet.
After speaking with one of the staff at Union Gospel Mission, they told me a story of one man leaving a recovery house and moving into a new apartment with absolutely nothing. He visited the Thrift Store located in Tigard, and left with items such as pots and pans to start his life again!
How does letting go of those old clothes sound now? Pretty good, I hope!

At Restoring Order, we value good stewardship. Our professional organizers help our clients make better use of their resources and live more purposefully. Organizing isn’t just about getting rid of your stuff and tidying up but about creating sustainable change. Our Organizing Consultants offer hands-on support to help you reclaim that closet, kitchen, or basement and give well to those in need. The belongings that are cluttering up your space and your mind can actually be a God-send to someone in need!
Speaking of getting rid of clutter, here is a before and after of one of our client’s closets:
Our Organizing Consultants follow the Restoring Order discovery process, creating sustainable change in a client’s life. This project first started with sorting like items and clothing. We then helped the client prune through their items as part of the process. As items are pruned, they must be moved out of the house and onto a new home – so why not to the Union Gospel Mission Thrift Store!?
We hope that you are energized to prune out your overage (the stuff we have over-and-above what we need and love) and give well. In the process you will help someone else “reclaim their life” when you give to UGM!
